Aero Precision EPC-9 Review: Short, Suppressed, and Built Different

Some builds start with a plan. Others start because Brownells has the right parts at the right time and suddenly you’re convincing yourself that this is “basically a practical purchase.”

That is pretty much how my Aero Precision EPC-9 pistol caliber carbine came together.

I picked up the complete Aero Precision EPC-9 upper and lower from Brownells, then decided to take the setup in a different direction. Originally, the EPC-9 had more of a full-size PCC feel, but I wanted something shorter, handier, and more suited to the role I had in mind. So I swapped in a Ballistic Advantage 5.5-inch 9mm barrel, also found at Brownells, and that changed the whole personality of the build.

The result is a compact, suppressed PCC setup with the suppressor recessed into the handguard, giving it that ultimate home-defense vibe while still keeping the shootability and effectiveness that makes a 9mm PCC so much fun.

Why the Aero Precision EPC-9?

The EPC-9 is Aero Precision’s dedicated 9mm platform, and it brings a lot of the same things people like about Aero’s AR-style products: clean machining, solid fit and finish, good parts compatibility, and a familiar manual of arms.

One of the biggest wins with the EPC-9 lower is that it is compatible with standard-frame Glock-pattern magazines, which is a major plus for Glock guys. If you already have Glock mags on hand, that makes the platform more convenient and easier to support. The EPC-9 lower also features a flared magazine well, integrated enlarged trigger guard, standard AR-15 takedown and pivot pin lug pattern, and is machined from custom-forged 7075-T6 aluminum. (Brownells)

The complete lower option from Brownells also gives you a strong starting point because it includes the EPC-9 lower receiver, lower parts kit, enhanced buffer tube, EPC 7.7-ounce buffer, M5 carbine buffer spring, and castle nut/end plate already installed. (Brownells)

That is one of the reasons I keep coming back to Brownells. For a project like this, they had the major pieces I needed to get the build moving without having to chase parts across five different websites.

From Full-Size PCC to Short Suppressed Setup

The big turning point for this EPC-9 was the barrel swap.

I went with the Ballistic Advantage 5.5-inch 9mm barrel, which took the gun from a more traditional PCC feel to something much shorter and more compact. Ballistic Advantage lists the 5.5-inch EPC barrel as a 9mm Modern Series barrel machined from chrome moly vanadium steel with a QPQ corrosion-resistant finish and 1/2x28 threading. (Ballistic Advantage)

That shorter barrel allowed me to run the suppressor recessed inside the handguard, which completely changed the vibe of the build. It gives the PCC a cleaner, more integrated look while keeping the overall package short and manageable.

And yes, it looks awesome.

This setup has that “small package, big attitude” feel. It is compact, unique, and very easy to move around with, but it still has the stability and control that makes a PCC effective. I am not trying to turn it into something it is not. It is still a 9mm platform. But as a practical, suppressed, compact PCC, this thing absolutely makes sense.

Brownells Had Everything I Needed

One of the biggest takeaways from this build is how easy Brownells made it to pull the project together.

The complete Aero Precision EPC-9 upper. The complete lower. The Ballistic Advantage barrel. The supporting parts and accessories. Brownells continues to be one of those places where I can start with an idea and actually find the parts needed to make it work.

That is why I keep mentioning them in these reviews. It is not just about buying one part. It is about having access to quality components from brands that make sense together.

For this EPC-9, Brownells was the source that helped take the build from a standard PCC into something that feels custom, compact, and purpose-driven.

The Die Free Co. Kung Fu Grip

For the grip, I went with the Die Free Co. Kung Fu Grip, and this has become my new go-to grip for my rifles and PCCs.

On this EPC-9, it makes perfect sense.

The Kung Fu Grip has that more vertical feel that works extremely well on shorter platforms. With compact rifles and PCCs, a traditional grip angle can feel a little stretched or awkward, especially when you are running a shorter length of pull. The Kung Fu Grip puts my hand in a more natural position and gives the gun a comfortable, controllable feel.

It is simple, comfortable, and practical. That is exactly what I want on a PCC like this.

Finishing It Out with the SBA3 Brace

The SB Tactical SBA3 brace finishes out the rear of the build and keeps the setup compact and adjustable. The SBA3 is listed as a minimalist, 5-position adjustable brace with an integral ambidextrous QD sling socket, and it is designed for platforms that accept a mil-spec carbine receiver extension. (SB Tactical)

For this EPC-9, it gives me the adjustability I want without making the gun feel bulky. It fits the overall theme of the build: compact, clean, functional, and easy to handle.

The Gideon Optics Mediator XL Steals the Show

The optic on this build is the new Gideon Optics Mediator XL, and this is where the setup really comes together.

A compact suppressed PCC needs an optic that is fast, easy to pick up, and gives you a generous sight picture. The Mediator XL does exactly that. Gideon lists the Mediator XL as a 1x optic with a large 28mm x 38mm lens window, and Gideon’s launch details describe it as having a massive sight window designed for a wider field of view. (Gideon Optics)

That matters on a PCC. A bigger window helps when you are shooting quickly, transitioning between targets, or getting behind the gun from less-than-perfect positions. On a platform like this EPC-9, the Mediator XL feels right at home because it keeps the setup fast and intuitive.

I also like how it looks on the gun. Some optics look out of place on shorter builds, either too small or too bulky. The Mediator XL gives this EPC-9 a serious look without throwing off the balance of the build. It feels like a great match for a compact PCC that is meant to be quick, capable, and fun to shoot.

Custom Cerakote by Triggered Dad

A big part of what makes this EPC-9 stand out is the custom Cerakote work done by my friend Dalton, also known as Triggered Dad.

The Cerakote gives the gun a unique look and feel that separates it from every other black PCC sitting on the wall. It has personality. It has style. It looks custom without looking ridiculous.

That is one of my favorite parts of the build. The gun is practical, but it still feels like mine. It has a look that makes people stop and ask about it, but it is not just a safe queen or social media prop. This thing runs, shoots, and hits.

Compact, But Still Capable

Even though this EPC-9 is short and suppressed, it is still an effective PCC option.

That is what surprised me the most. The shorter setup gives it a more compact feel, but it still has the accuracy and control that make PCCs so appealing. It can still hit from distance, and it gives you that stable, familiar AR-style platform in 9mm.

The Glock-pattern magazine compatibility is another major bonus. If you already live in the Glock ecosystem, this is one of those features that makes the EPC-9 even more attractive. Shared magazine compatibility is convenient, practical, and honestly just a win.

For Glock guys, that matters.

Final Thoughts

My Aero Precision EPC-9 started as a solid PCC and turned into something way more interesting.

With the complete upper and lower from Brownells, the Ballistic Advantage 5.5-inch barrel, the Die Free Co. Kung Fu Grip, the SB Tactical SBA3 brace, the Gideon Optics Mediator XL, and the custom Cerakote from Triggered Dad, this build has become one of the most unique PCCs in my lineup.

It is compact, suppressed, stylish, and effective. It has that recessed suppressor look that gives it serious home-defense vibes, but it still performs like a capable PCC that can reach out and make hits.

This is exactly why I like building and customizing firearms. You can start with a quality foundation like the Aero Precision EPC-9, then tailor it into something that fits your use, your style, and your personality.

And once again, Brownells made it easy to get the parts needed to bring the idea together. From Aero Precision to Ballistic Advantage and beyond, they had what I needed to make this build work.

If you are looking at building out a PCC, especially one that runs Glock-pattern magazines, the Aero Precision EPC-9 is absolutely worth a look. And if you want to finish it with a fast, wide-window optic, check out the Gideon Optics Mediator XL and use code JAYWETH at checkout.
